Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health focuses on diagnosing and treating the unique health needs of women. Your reproductive organs require special care and present certain health risks. Although men and women develop similar health problems, the symptoms may present differently.

Also, annual well-woman exams can alert you to female-specific problems, including endometriosis, cervical cancer, and breast cancer.

The umbrella of women’s health also includes pregnancy testing and prenatal care, treatment for menstruation issues, and sexual health services such as STD testing.

You may also receive treatment as part of women’s health services, depending on your needs, for:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Heavy periods
  • Fatigue
  • PMS
  • Perimenopause or menopause
  • Yeast infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pelvic pain

The team also treats vaginitis and dyspareunia or pain during intercourse.

What happens during a women’s health exam?

Desert Wells Family Medicine tailors your women’s health or well-woman exam to your individual needs and concerns.

First, your practitioner performs a physical exam, reviews your medical history, and asks you about any symptoms you’re experiencing. After checking your vital signs, reflexes, and general physical health, they perform a pelvic and breast exam.

You may need a Pap test as part of your pelvic exam to screen for cervical cancer if you’re between the ages of 21-65, and a test for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause genital warts or cervical cancer.

You may also receive counseling on birth control to choose the right method for you, as well as STD testing.

What menopause management options exist?

The Desert Wells Family Medicine team regularly works with women who are struggling with the effects of perimenopause and menopause. While this is a normal part of a woman’s natural aging process, it presents an array of uncomfortable symptoms, including night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and sleep disturbances.

Whenever possible, the team takes a holistic approach to treatment and might recommend exercising more regularly, eating a balanced diet, or participating in stress-relieving activities like yoga or meditation.

If your symptoms persist, the team also offers hormone replacement therapy, which can relieve the symptoms of menopause and also protect bone health due to a loss of estrogen.
